After high school, students can choose between vocational training and higher education. Vocational programs often emphasise practical skills related to specific occupations, such as automotive repair, beauty services, or hospitality. These courses are usually shorter but may lead to faster employment. For instance, a student completing a two-year cooking course might start working in a restaurant right away. In some industries, vocational graduates are in high demand due to their specialised skills. University education, on the other hand, offers broader knowledge in fields like science, business, or the humanities. It covers a wide range of subjects, from economics to social sciences, and may offer broader career pathways. Some jobs, like teaching or engineering, often require a university qualification. However, the academic route may also involve higher costs and longer study periods. The decision between these two options can depend on learning styles, personal interests, and long-term career planning.

In Vietnam, the university entrance exam plays an important role in the education system. Each year, almost all students take this exam after finishing Grade 12. It is often considered a major turning point, as the results decide which universities or colleges students can attend. The pressure surrounding the exam is high, with months of preparation, extra classes, and practice tests.

The exam usually covers core subjects like Math, Literature, English, and sometimes Science or Social Studies, depending on the student’s chosen group. The format combines multiple-choice questions and written responses. The exam aims to ensure fairness and standardisation. However, some argue that it focuses too much on memorisation rather than critical thinking or creativity.

Recently, some changes have been introduced to improve the process. Universities are allowed to use multiple admission methods, including high school GPA and aptitude tests. However, the traditional exam remains central for most students. The intense competition and high expectations continue to make it one of the most challenging experiences in Vietnamese student life.

Online learning has become more popular in recent years, especially after the pandemic. It allows students to attend classes from anywhere, saving time and travel costs. Online platforms often provide recorded lessons, which help learners review at their own pace. This method also supports flexible schedules, which is useful for those with other commitments.

However, online learning has several drawbacks. Students may find it harder to focus without a classroom setting. Technical issues, such as unstable internet or device problems, can interrupt lessons. In addition, a lack of face-to-face contact may reduce motivation and make it difficult to ask questions or join discussions actively.

In contrast, traditional learning provides a structured environment. Teachers and students interact directly, which helps build relationships and encourages immediate feedback. Group work and in-class activities often improve communication and teamwork skills. For many learners, this setting creates a stronger sense of discipline and responsibility.

Still, face-to-face learning also presents challenges. Fixed timetables may not suit students with part-time jobs or other duties. Long commutes can be tiring and reduce personal study time. Some students feel anxious in large classes or hesitate to speak up in front of others. Physical classrooms may also limit access to multimedia tools or global resources available online.
