STEVE JOBS: THREE STORIES FROM A REMARKABLE LIFE

Steve Jobs (1955–2011), the co-founder of Apple, is one of the most admired figures of our time. In 2005, he gave a famous speech at Stanford University in which he told the graduates three stories from his own life. The first story was about "connecting the dots". After only six months at Reed College, he decided to drop out because his working-class parents were spending all their savings on his tuition. However, he stayed on campus and attended classes that interested him, including a calligraphy course. Ten years later, while he was designing the first Macintosh computer, this knowledge helped him create its beautiful typefaces.

The second story was about love and loss. Jobs and his friend Steve Wozniak started Apple in his parents' garage when Jobs was 20. In ten years, Apple grew from just the two of them into a $2 billion company with over 4,000 employees. Then, at the age of 30, he was fired from the company he had started. It was a devastating blow, and for a few months he did not know what to do. Slowly, however, he realised that he still loved his work.

Over the next five years, Jobs started a company called NeXT and another called Pixar, which went on to create the world's first computer-animated feature film, Toy Story. When Apple bought NeXT, Jobs returned to Apple. He later said that being fired from Apple was the best thing that could have happened to him, because it freed him to enter one of the most creative periods of his life.

The third story was about death. About a year before the speech, Jobs had been diagnosed with cancer. The experience reminded him that our time is limited, so we should not waste it living someone else's life. He ended his speech by encouraging the students to "Stay hungry. Stay foolish."
